When oil is first extracted from the ground, it usually comes mixed with water and natural gas—what’s known as wellstream fluids. These mixtures need to be separated before the oil can be stored, transported, or sold.
The heater treater applies heat to the emulsion (oil-water mixture), encouraging the different components to separate based on density. Gas rises to the top, water settles to the bottom, and oil remains in the middle—making it easier to extract and treat each one separately.
These units are especially valuable at or near the wellhead, where raw production fluids first arrive.
By preparing the crude oil for the next stage of processing, vertical heater treaters help improve product quality, reduce transportation costs, and prevent equipment damage downstream (downstream means after raw material has been extracted out of the ground.
