This 24,000 gallon propane tank has held propane reliably since 1954, and it stands ready to serve for decades more. Chicago Bridge & Iron (CB&I) built this vessel, and their name on the data plate tells you what you need to know about the workmanship. Put simply, they built it right the first time.

Construction and Condition

The tank wears a coat of silver paint that shows honest wear, and only minor surface rust has surfaced over seven decades. Steel feet anchor the vessel to its concrete footers, and the builders welded extra plate steel at each footer to spread the load and protect the shell – real foresight for a tank meant to last. A ladder climbs one end to a welded platform up top, so an operator reaches the pressure and level gauge without a fight.

⚠️ Working Pressure & Relocation – Please Read Before Bidding

This tank carries a stamped working pressure of 227 PSI. It has held commercial propane in continuous Texas service since 1954 and is fully grandfathered where it sits. Buyers should understand, however, that the modern standard for new ASME propane containers is 250 PSI, and this tank predates that standardization.

What that means for you: the 227 PSI rating is a sub-250 vessel. Its acceptance for propane service after relocation is not automatic and depends entirely on the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) where the tank will land:

• Texas grandfather status does not travel with the tank. These rules only apply within Texas and are administered by the Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC). Once the tank crosses state lines, the destination state’s LP-gas program governs, and that state is not obligated to honor Texas’s allowance.
• Some states will not approve a sub-250 vessel for bulk propane service. Requirements vary by state and by the code edition the tank was built to.
• Even a move to a new Texas site is treated as a new installation by the RRC, subject to current installation rules.

Bottom line: Confirm acceptability with your destination AHJ before you commit to disconnecting and hauling. If your intended use is propane, verify your state will approve a 227 PSI vessel for that service. The tank may also suit lower-pressure product service depending on your needs.
