What Is 304 Stainless Steel?

304 stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant alloy that contains chromium and nickel as its primary alloying elements. Because it offers a strong combination of durability, corrosion resistance, and affordability, manufacturers use it extensively throughout oil and gas, industrial, and commercial facilities.

Composition

304SS belongs to the austenitic stainless steel family. Typically, it contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which is why many people refer to it as “18-8 stainless steel.” These alloying elements help form a protective oxide layer that resists corrosion and oxidation.
